Learning at Home Ideas & Resources

I hope you find this list to be helpful for your use over Spring Break and for the rest of the school year! This list is certainly not meant to be something you have to do every single day, but rather a list of resources you can pick & choose to work on while at home. This is also separate from the assigned work students will receive for E-learning. Enjoy!

Reading Writing

Reading Eggs is a great resource to help your students practice their phonics skills while at home. It is recommended they complete 2 lessons per day.

Epic

Epic! has become a classroom staple because students love it so much. You can use this resource for students to continue reading at home as well as using the read aloud feature to help them practice reading along with the story.

Epic! Help

Our class LOVES using Vooks. Classic & new stories have been animated and adapted into a video format. For a limited time, Vooks is offering 1 month free so your child can continue watching their favorite stories.

Renaissance Place is where students take their AR quizzes in order to make their AR goals. You will find this app in Class Link. I recommend that students read a story 2-3 times before they take a quiz on it.

If you have further questions on how to use this app or need help with finding your student's appropriate reading level, please email me or message me on Class Dojo!

Ideas for Reading & Writing:

  • Create a reading ritual with your child. Set aside a time each day that you and your child will read together. Siblings can also partake in this time as well!

  • Talk about the pictures and ask questions as you read together.

  • Practice sight words using their sight word flashcards (sent home earlier) or using Fluency & Fitness (great for math and reading!)

  • Write a different ending to a story they've listened to on Epic! or Vooks. Could they have solved the character's problems differently?

  • Choose 6-8 words in a story they've read to put in ABC order.

Math

We have used XtraMath as an easy way to practice our math facts in the classroom. Each lesson takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. The app should automatically log them in; however, if they have issues logging in, you can click the link below for help or contact me as some of the student's logins are trickier than others.

In class, we did two lessons a day (so a total of 10 lessons each week), but they are welcome to do more than 2.

Dreambox will get more difficult as students progress. The best way to offer assistance is to give the students an example separately from the app lesson, otherwise Dreambox will assume the student understands and give them harder lessons, making it more difficult the more help they get. They can also click the ? button in the top corner so they app can give an example of how to complete the lesson.

If your student continues to experience difficulty with a lesson or is stuck, please reach out and I can help through Dojo video!

Ideas for Math:

  • Create flashcards for addition and subtraction facts for students to practice!

  • Flash to Pass (an app found on Self Service in their iPads) is another app that helps students practice their math facts.
